چکیده

A cryptic invader of the genus Persicaria has recently increased in damper, northern parts La Palma and Gran Canaria Canary Islands (Spain) locally behaves as an invasive species. Examination historical herbarium specimens showed this species to be present since 1960s same probably applies Palma. Up now, had been assigned Old World weed P. maculosa. However, morphologically, these plants clearly correspond with hydropiperoides, a common widespread native New World, indeed morphologically similar Diagnostic features for two species, well another (P. decipiens, originally described from Islands), are compared, thoroughly discussed, copiously illustrated. The current distribution, ecology, naturalization status hydropiperoides also assessed. variability is more precisely taxonomic position southern ‘race’ it that sometimes referred distinct persicarioides, which Canarian belong. value latter appears clear, although at lower level. new combination, varietal rank, proposed validated. In addition our morphology-based study, molecular phylogenetic analysis conducted on nuclear ITS region plastid DNA trnL-F.

[High prevalence of hypovitaminosis D in medical students in Gran Canaria, Canary Islands (Spain)].

BACKGROUND Vitamin D deficiency has been described in many diseases and indeed in the general population. However fewer reports have been published in young and healthy people. Vitamin D deficiency should not be found in medical students of the Canary Islands, because they have all the resources to avoid it. OBJECTIVE To estimate the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency in a population of medic...

Plant invasion and speciation along elevational gradients on the oceanic island La Palma, Canary Islands

Ecosystems that provide environmental opportunities but are poor in species and functional richness generally support speciation as well as invasion processes. These processes are expected not to be equally effective along elevational gradients due to specific ecological, spatial, and anthropogenic filters, thus controlling the dispersal and establishment of species. Here, we investigate specia...

Cumbre Vieja Volcano -- Potential collapse and tsunami at La Palma, Canary Islands

Geological evidence suggests that during a future eruption, Cumbre Vieja Volcano on the Island of La Palma may experience a catastrophic failure of its west flank, dropping 150 to 500 km of rock into the sea. Using a geologically reasonable estimate of landslide motion, we model tsunami waves produced by such a collapse. Waves generated by the run-out of a 500 km (150 km) slide block at 100 m/s...

On the generic placement of the narrow-range endemic 'Helix' arguineguinensis Seddon & Aparicio, 1998 from Gran Canaria (Canary Islands).

The nominal taxon 'Helix' arguineguinensis Seddon & Aparicio, 1998 is a narrow-range endemic from Gran Canaria (Canary Islands, Spain) known only from few localities in the vicinity of Argüineguin in the south-western part of the island (Mousson, 1874; Wollaston, 1878; Seddon & Aparicio, 1998). The narrow range of the taxon and potential threats to its habitat as a consequence of ongoing urbani...
